Earth Hour 2020
A Night Walk
In conjunction with Earth Hour on March 28th 2020, we had planned to go for a Night Walk under the stars at Kota Kinabalu Wetland Centre to look for nocturnal animals and plants attracting nocturnal insects.
It seemed the perfect activity to do with the kids, whist the lights were out during Earth Hour and something we had looked forward to for a long time. Sadly, with the Covid-19 lockdown, we had no choice but to come up with a plan B that would keep everyone safe at home, yet not spoil our plans completely.
Preparing the Backyard Bug Hunt
As Simon took the kids for a bath upstairs, I got a bunch of toy insects, lizards, snakes and monkeys together and went outside to scatter them around our garden. Turns out a neglected backyard is the perfect place for a bug hunt with everything suitably and easily camouflaged in the bushes, branches and flowerpots.
Lights out
After dinner when darkness had set in, it was all lights out and on with the head torches as we ventured into our backyard jungle. Although I did not manage to fool the kids into thinking that any of the “animals” I had perfectly scattered around the garden were real, they had so much fun exploring in the dark.
It was the perfect opportunity to check in on the tadpoles and the goldfish and see what they get up to in the dark. Not forgetting the spiders, which they were very keen to show me – disappointingly nothing was too scary for mummy this time ‘round.
Easy set up anywhere
It was a very simple activity to set up and well received. Just being outside in complete darkness and with torches was already fun for the kids. If you do not have a garden it can be set up indoors with a few toys hanging from the ceiling and hidden in ornaments or potted plants around your home.
I hope you have fun planning your own adventure. Stay at home, be safe and protect your loved ones and your neighbors.
